- For better understanding of the operating principle of pulse tube based GCM, there is a theory that the cylinder encloses a portion of gas with a constant mass and volume Vd (gas displacer volume), which always remains in the cylinder and divides it into volumes of warm Vw and cold Vc cavities. In the process of the machine’s operation, the gas displacer performs reciprocal movements in the cylinder, i.e. functions as a regular displacer. Gas displacer motion is ensured by presence of a receiver, hydraulic resistance and a bypass line with hydraulic resistance.
- The research school in the field of applying cryogenic technology in aviation has emerged in Samara in 1960s. NK-88 engine running on liquid hydrogen was created in the design bureau under the leadership of Academician Nikolai Kuznetsov. The core team of the engineers who worked on that engine included graduates of the Kuibyshev Aviation Institute (now the Samara National Research University. The NK-88 engine was installed on an experimental Tu-155 aircraft that first took off on April 15, 1988. Currently, NK-88 is an exhibit at the Aviation Engines History Centre in Samara University.
- Since the early 2000s, Samara University is conducting studies to improve the energy efficiency of cryogenic systems and units via low-potential energy of cryoproducts. The new area’s research team was made up from specialists of the Department of Thermal Engineering and Thermal Engines and Research and Education Centre for Gas-Dynamic Studies (REC GDS). Since 2020, a cryogenic equipment laboratory has been actively developing on the basis of S&E GDRC. The main thrust of the laboratory is to compute, design and create highly efficient power plants and engines operating on cryogenic fuels, including LNG. Scientific and applied studies by the laboratory are carried out with financial support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia (project No. FSSS-2020-0019), planned for 4 years.
