Samara University’s delegation headed by the President of the University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Soifer, paid a working visit to the Russian Federal Nuclear Center – All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF) and the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics in Sarov.
The delegation included: Albert Gareev, the Head of the Research Department, Aleksander Kupriyanov, Director of Institute of Informatics and Cybernetics, Roman Skidanov, Professor at the Department of Technical Cybernetics.
The University’s representatives took part in the meeting at the RFNC-VNIIEF and got acquainted with operation of the supercomputer center. During the visit, Samara University and the RFNC-VNIIEF signed the agreement on cooperation in scientific and educational fields.
Then the delegation visited the National Centre of Physics and Mathematics, inspected the infrastructure of the Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University – Sarov Moscow State University, laboratory facilities, the center for supercomputer computing, and took part in the meeting dedicated to implementation of the NCFM scientific program in terms of developing photonic computing devices.
Let us recall that Samara University’s specialists developed a demonstration sample of the high-performance photonic processor as part of the research program of the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics (NCFM), with support of the Rosatom State Corporation. The device operates on a new, photonic component base, in which information is transmitted by light particles (photons), and not by electrons, as in conventional computers. The specialized processor even now allows recognizing huge arrays of data in large video streams.
“We see the interest of the RFNC-VNIIEF in solving problems related to high-performance computing. And photonics will certainly show itself. Moreover, electronics will not disappear anywhere. It is incorrect to think that exclusively photonic computing machines will be created. The role of photonics is solving tasks, such as processing large amounts of data – video streams, images. Herewith, given the rapid progress in optoelectronics, in integrated optical chips, there is hope that the data processing speed and performance of the analog photonic processor will increase”, commented Victor Soifer.
The President of the University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Soifer and Professor at the Department of Technical Cybernetics Roman Skidanov talked to students and told them about the progress in work on creating the photonic processor.
For reference:
The All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF) is a Russian state scientific and industrial enterprise, part of the Rosatom State Corporation. It is located in the closed settlement of Sarov.
The RFNC-VNIIEF consists of several institutes:
- Institute of Theoretical and Mathematical Physics;
- Institute of Experimental Gas-Dynamics and Explosion Physics;
- Institute of Nuclear and Radiation Physics;
- Institute of Laser-Physics Research;
- Scientific and Technical Centre for High Energy Densities;
- Design bureaus and theme centers.
The National Centre for Physics and Mathematics (NCFM) is a flagship project of the Decade of Science and Technology. In Sarov (Nizhny Novgorod Region), a complex of research buildings, advanced laboratories and equipment of Midi-science and Mega-science Classes is being built in the territory of the NCFM, for the purpose of obtaining new world-class scientific results, training high-quality scientists, educating new scientific and technological leaders, strengthening the human-resources potential of the Rosatom State Corporation enterprises and key scientific organizations in Russia.
The educational part of the National Centre has become the Branch of Lomonosov Moscow State University – Sarov MSU. The NCFM is founded by the Rosatom State Corporation, Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, RFNC-VNIIEF, RC “Kurchatov Institute” and JINR.
