The development will minimize the number of emergency situations related to drones

Scientists of Samara University and the Image Processing Systems Institute of the RAS are going to develop a unified security ecosystem for domestic unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), based on the mainstream model of artificial intelligence. “There are no such systems both in Russia and in the world”, told us Artyom Nikonorov, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Institute and the Head of the Centre for Intelligent Mobility of Multifunctional Unmanned Aircraft Systems at Samara University.

“We have been implementing this project together with the company-developer of unmanned aircraft systems “Transport Budushchego” (Transport of the Future), which has been creating a plant for manufacturing civilian drones in the territory of the Tolyatti SEZ. The system we develop using artificial intelligence will make it possible to do drones operation safe and minimize the number of emergency situations. Besides, this system will establish the industry standard for all unmanned aviation”.

As the Director of the Artificial Intelligence Institute noted, using drones in the economy and industry will grow every year. When tens of thousands of drones are able to be in the airspace simultaneously, the problem of ensuring safety of their movement and operation during takeoff and landing will become extremely urgent. For solving it, artificial intelligence will be needed, which, as a digital assistant or dispatcher, will control interaction of drones with humans and with each other, for the purpose of avoiding accidental damage or collisions. In future, this artificial intelligence can be scaled to many different processes in the field of UAS safety. Moreover, so-called frameworks (sets of pre-trained AI models, methods and tools) – ready-made solutions that require only point-to-point adjustment for use in real conditions from “smart” agriculture to monitoring facilities – will be developed for drones.

“The main requirement for emergence and development of the unmanned aviation industry is a drone operation as safe as possible for humans and the environment, for the important infrastructure. Therefore, such an intelligent system ensuring safety of UAV flights will undoubtedly give rise to establishing the unmanned aviation industry in our country and in the world”, emphasized Artyom Nikonorov.

The system is developed by the staff of the University Centre for Intelligent Mobility of Multifunctional Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Currently, the Centre’s team includes over 50 scientists who are employees of the Artificial Intelligence Institute at Samara University and the Image Processing Systems Institute of the RAS.

The Centre’s staff has significant experience in R&D related to artificial intelligence for such customers as Russian Railways, Huawei, Sber, etc. The Centre has accumulated much experience in developing computer vision and multimodal data processing systems. The Centre’s staff made essential contribution to creation of the ruDALL-E model, which formed the basis of the Sber image generation services, and continue to cooperate with this company.

At present, the Centre participates in the preliminary selection of recipients of support for research centres related to artificial intelligence, including those in the field of “strong” AI, trusted AI systems and ethical aspects of AI application, conducted by the Analytical Centre under the Government of the Russian Federation in the area of transport and logistics.

Samara University is a participant in the National Project “Science and Universities”.

The company “Transport Budushchego” develop unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), including air taxis and large drones weighing up to 700 kg. In the territory of the Tolyatti SEZ in the Samara Region, the company is creating mass production of UAS and their structural elements - composite screws, electric motors, drivers, body parts, avionics.

The Image Processing Systems Institute of the RAS is the Branch of the Federal State Institution “Federal Research Centre “Crystallography and Photonics” of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
