Samara University delegation took part in the work of the 61st Session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). It runs from June 22 to June 29 in Vienna.
The international expert community is discussing issues related to the development of space technologies for the sustainable development of mankind, the use of space technologies in the United Nations system, the problems of climate change and much more.
During the work of the 61st session, a report on the activities of the COPUOS Technical Subcommittee in 2017 was presented, which included a report on the large-scale UN Workshop held in Samara in November 2017, "Human Capacity-Building in Space Science and Technology for Sustainable Social and Economic Development". In November Samara University, for the first time, hosted the leaders of national space agencies, aerospace universities, public organizations from 42 countries, whose activities are related to the popularization of space achievements. As a result, the workshop participants formulated the recommendations on the peaceful exploration of outer space for the world expert community.
In Vienna, Samara University delegation, consisting of the head of the Inter-University Department of Space Research Igor Belokonov and the head of the International Cooperation Department Anton Gulbis, took part in negotiations with the leadership of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. The parties discussed the expansion of cooperation between Samara University and UNOOSA within implementation of the recommendations formed by the results of the UN Workshop in Samara and included in the program for the development of space activities in Russia until 2030.
In particular, Samara University proposed the creation of a working group on education within the COPUOS Technical Subcommittee, which would deal with the creation and strengthening of human potential and the development of international cooperation in the field of education in space technology.
In his speech in Vienna, the head of the Russian delegation, Roscosmos General Director Dmitry Rogozin confirmed the intentions formulated during the UN Workshop at Samara University in 2017 on the establishment of a regional educational centre in Russia affiliated with the United Nations.
